Know Before You Go!

Today Mommy booked our airplane tickets for Europe and Grammy is coming to help us get there and get settled! It took Mommy a while and we still aren't done, but at least we are booked. Mommy did some research on flying with little doggies, like me, to and from Europe. Coming home from the UK is not as hard as getting in, but it does take research, communication, and preparation.
First, Mommy booked our flight and rental car. Then she called the airline to tell them there would be a doggy on board. Airlines have pet limits in the cabin so Mommy wanted to make sure we were good to go. The man Mommy talked to was very nice and very helpful. He was patient and answered all of Mommy's questions. They now have me in the computer on Mommy's reservation. So they know I'm coming!!! Watch out, diva on board!
Mommy is still worried about traveling in the UK. We are flying into Paris since they are dog friendly! Then, we are going to rent a car at the airport, load up, and head north to Calais. Calais has the ONLY train in France that will allow doggies to ride with you to England. When we get to the train station in Calais, we have to stop at the UK pet customs office. That's where the UK officials will check out my paperwork and charge Mommy a ridiculous customs fee. Once I get the "all clear" we drive into the train station and drive our car ONTO THE TRAIN! I get to stay with Mommy and Grammy in the car for the 35 minute journey across the English Channel. When we get to England, we drive off of the train into England and head to our cottage in Welwyn.
It's coming home that Mommy is worried about. Her research says getting home from England is not a problem. But just in case she is going to call the London, Heathrow airport to ask if I am ok to ride in the cabin. The very nice airline man Mommy talked to today gave her the telephone number. He also said, if we needed any help or had any other questions to give him a call and he would help.
If you are a service dog or emotional support animal, make sure you check your airline's procedures. Our airline requires 3 forms of documentation for emotional support dogs. First, you need a letter from a physician stating you need your dog for emotional support. Second, you need a signed certificate saying your dog passed emotional support training. Third, you need updated shot records. These documents must be uploaded to the airline website. All airlines are different, so make sure you check out yours. You may also want to check out pet carrier guidelines. Airline websites have a lot of the information, but Mommy also called and they were very helpful on the phone.
Bottom line, know before you go! It will make your travel experience less stressful for you and your pet!

Sophia
